Film studies deals with the theory, history, and and analysis of viewing films. Our final unit has been paired with media studies and is intended to provide a more visual approach to exploring more holistic aspects of cinema. This unit is less concerned with advancing proficiency in film production than it is with exploring the narrative, artistic, cultural, economic, and political implications of the cinema. As a follow up to Media Studies, we will pay close attention to the context and creation of select films. "In this sense the film studies discipline exists as one in which the teacher does not always assume the primary educator role; the featured film itself serves that function" (Dyer, 2000).

Throughout our Media Studies unit, many of you questioned the media's representation of women and body image. For your final writing assignment, you might want to check out The Represenation Project. A film directed by Award Winning Director, Jennifer Sibel Newsom. This film combines the key questions and concepts of Media Studies with the technical codes and cultural/societal conventions of Film Studies.
"The film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself".
