The Purpose of Poetry
Breathe-in experience, breathe-out poetry.
Muriel Rukeyser
W.B. Yeats said this of poetry, "Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry." Good communication is difficult, and the consequences of poor communication are far-reaching. Effective communication takes place when we realize we all perceive the world differently, and we use this understanding to guide our relationships with others. Studying poetry forces us to confront language in unique constructions and make personal meanings from the range of emotions and experiences in life.
